The Parade is actually an historic parade dating back to the early years of San Francisco gay and lesbian community. Back then, gay and lesbian people were harassed and beaten in public. Then in 1969 the St. Valentine’s Day Parade was disrupted by a bomb threat and cancelled by the police. The Bomb scare happened just before the St. Valentine’s Day Parade was scheduled to begin. San Francisco gay and lesbian groups had planned a massive parade, but with the bomb scare, they lost their plans.
Gay and lesbian groups decided to go unifying instead, and create the now famous Gay and Lesbian Parade. Now gay pride parades are a worldwide phenomenon. San Francisco has its gay and lesbian gay pride events, as well as larger ones in other major cities. The Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade is the largest gay pride parades in the world. There are some parades that have gay and lesbian theme, with unisex themes for men, women, and children.
The theme of the Gay Pride Parade is “angelld”, which is German for “gay”. At every major gay pride parade, large banners with the word “agosl” (gay) and rainbow flags are seen. “angesl” means gay/lesbian in German. This word is used all over the world in gay pride parades and gay pride rallies.
