The Pegasus World Cup Cycling Team has announced the long awaited confirmation of its participation in the 2021 World Cup. The squad which is made up of riders and support staffs from across the globe is to take part in the first ever sanctioned Giro d’Italia. It will be the first time that this team will represent Italy in a road racing event outside of the Olympic Games. This has been a longstanding goal of the Italian team since their inception and they have managed to win four times so far. Now the team will be looking to secure one of two world championships in the future.

The Pegasus World Cup Cycling Team has never faced off against the more established Teams like the Lotto-NL and Tinkoff-Saxon. This is a big challenge for the squad which has never tasted victory against these bigger competitors and it will be a tough test for any team to handle. However, if the squad can prove that it is up to the task, then this could be an exciting year for Italian cycling. Only two of the team’s seven World Cup appearances have come against the bigger teams so far and those wins came in the Tours de France and the Criterions d’Eau.

The biggest surprise of the season so far was the surprise inclusion of former cycling champion, Lance Armstrong. Though many expected him to sign with the team given his recent revelations regarding his use of performance enhancing drugs, he decided to stand down and let other people do the talking instead. This has raised some expectations for this team. Armstrong has proven that he is still a force to be reckoned with but the question now is whether or not he is fit enough to be a part of the competition. Team officials have made it clear that he is still very much part of the team and is only leaving because of personal reasons.

The main point of contention between the team and the rider is the leadership. Armstrong’s replacement is none other than Peterantoiu Vitorao. This appointment has caused a split between the team and its leader. With the changing political situation in the country, a new team leader needs to instill confidence within the team so as not to cause a distraction during the World Cup season. The new Italian team leader has been given a tough task of leading the team into the world cup with nothing but good results at hand.

The other big change is the addition of new talents in the team. There are some very talented riders in the Italian team and having them on the podium would definitely give the Italian team a huge boost. These riders have been riding for a long time but have never won a championship so this would be a huge boost for the team if they can win this years competition.

The other big factor that needs to be considered is the new team leader. Many people have been critical of how Armstrong was replaced by Vitorao but it seems that the team made the right move. Armstrong had proven his abilities throughout his career to be a very good champion in the Tour de France but he also has a problem with motivating his team. Having someone with a more aggressive streak in the team would definitely motivate the riders to perform better during the season. Also having a strong leader in the team like Vitorao would benefit the other riders because they don’t feel like they are being pushed.

For those who are doubting whether the Pegasus WEC team is good enough to win the Pegasus World Cup 21, the answer is definitely “no”. This competition is all about experience. No one in the team has won a world event before. However, this doesn’t mean that they don’t have the ability to win. They just need more time to prove that they are ready to be in the top 10.

The team has changed their line up to a much more experienced Tinkoff team with Maxim Valbergen and Peter Kennelly. They still have no true team leader but it won’t take them long to get that spot. This will be an interesting battle to watch between these two. My prediction is that Valbergen will once again lead the team but Kennelly has a great chance to steal the show.
